UNDERSTANDING THE SYSTEM by Patrick Smith

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has set forth rules of supervision for person's released on parole and mandatory supervision that must be followed. These rules are subject to revocation or other sanctions for violations of them. One of those rules pertain to contact with the victim of victims family. There shall be no contact with the victim or the victim's family, which also includes through a 3rd party.

There are instances where a victim or family members of a victim seek closure by speaking with the ex-offender. The only way this can happen is if the victim/family member contacts TDCJ victim/Offender Mediation Program. They then will contact the offender and if the offender is willing to meet, a date, location and time will be setup.

NOTE: The offender can not initiate this process.
